Pennsylvania Affiliate Tax Law Update: What You Can Do To Help
Just a small update on the PA Affiliate Tax issues… Thankfully I have not yet been hit too hard by this issue. If you are not familiar with what is going on in Pennsylvania, and many other states around the country, read my previous post: Pennsylvania Affiliate Marketers Just Got Screwed
To clarify a bit from my previous post, this is not a new law, rather a new interpretation on an existing law. The state sent a bulletin telling all merchants that they have until the start of Feb 2012 to register to collect sales tax on all sales made by PA affiliates – which in turn has caused many merchants to terminate their association with PA affiliates. This has devastated many small online business and will most likely put some people out of business completely.
Personally, the only merchant that has dropped me to date is Backcountry.com and some other stores which are owned by Backcountry. This has affected sales on one of my “daily deal” sites, but only to a small degree because that site is still not getting much traffic yet. So far Ebay and Amazon have not taken any action, and I don’t think this law has any affect on pay per click advertisers such as Adsense (at least not yet).
If you are a PA affiliate, I urge you to follow the steps listed at the Performance Marketing Association website. You can also join this google group with more discussion on the topic.
In other vaguely related news, I started a new local blog about living in Pittsburgh. Check it out if you are from the area or thinking about visiting in the future.
Merry Christmas!

It’s nice to see bloggers and affiliate marketers in your area join forces and take proactive steps to deal with this Pennsylvania tax thing. Keep fighting the good fight – hopefully things will work out for the better!
This could get really nasty. Most of the guys I know are going to get screwed and I am very suspicious that Google might push this to its writers as well. Whenever someone tries to interpret an old law, something happens. This really sucks.

They have already killed it in cali from what I have read, its a worry for the industry. I would seriously consider moving (from the UK) to the east if too big a chunk of my affiliate earnings were been taken.

Hey Mike, I hope you could keep your eBay and Adsense income.
Amazon suspended all CA affiliates back to July and I shifted all my focus on Adsense.
Thankful that they “reactived” it back to Oct.
In 2012, I plan to grow my Adsense income to 4-digit a month. It’s hard-work, but do-able.
Good luck, dude!

America is becoming a scary place making it harder to make serious money online, signing the NDAA on new years eve and taxing taxing taxing.
I find the best place to make money online at the moment is with cpa offers but I have spent a few months working towards this, I dont think its something you could just jump to overnight but I would definitly say its worth a look.
